Are you ready for cocaine
addiction rehab?

The short and long-term ramifications of cocaine are certainly not glamorous. Severe anxiety and depression are just the starts.

quote 1

The pandemic was incredibly rough for all of us. Some of us survived, and some of us are not in a good place. Watching my brother's substance abuse spiral out of control, I decided I needed to support him in the best way possible.

After reading several extremely positive online reviews, I reached out to the team at Refocus. My initial contact was with Michael on the telephone, and he arranged for the clinical team to assess my brother's suitability for the programme. Thank goodness all went well, and my brother was admitted to Refocus. Fast forward three months, and I have my brother back. The team cared for him so well, supporting him along this difficult journey. He and I both understand that rehabilitation is a process, and we are both incredibly grateful that a facility such as this exists in Australia. — Deutsch A (not pictured)

What is Cocaine?

Cocaine is traditionally made from the leaves of a South American plant called the “coca bush”.

It is a stimulant, in a sense like coffee but much more powerful. It triggers hormones and brain chemicals that elicit an incredible ‘high’. Feelings of euphoria and confidence combined with lowering inhibitions make it a popular drug in the social scene.

There are three components that make up cocaine: crack, freebase and hydrochloride.

Cocaine can be consumed in a number of ways. These include injection or snorting it. Some elect to rub it into their gums, and others also smoke it.

Why is Cocaine
Addictive?

Cocaine provides an incredible rush.

It provides a temporary sense of deep happiness, excitement, contentment and an alert state.

People are drawn to these states psychologically as well as physically. This is the fundamental problem with cocaine use.

What are the
Effects of Taking
Cocaine?

On top of depression and anxiety, users report paranoia, tremors, kidney problems, sexual issues, sweating, and heart problems.

Overdoses occur and can cause seizures and strokes.

Am I Addicted to cocaine?

Addiction is a complicated condition. In simple terms, it can be described as compulsive behaviour that promotes an intense focus on a substance that yields negative outcomes.

Two fundamental properties that determine addiction include (i) addictive stimuli that are reinforcing and (ii) stimuli that are perceived as being inherently beneficial, desirable, or pleasurable.

Many people become addicted to drugs after repeated exposure despite their best efforts. What usually starts as a social habit quickly morphs into a regular day-to-day ‘solution’. Many people make this transition under the guise that it helps them focus and concentrate when lacking energy or clarity or helps them relax and ease pain in moments of stress. These examples fulfil both addiction properties of reinforcing and being perceived as inherently beneficial (at least initially).

Key Questions to Ask

— Many people across Australia face cocaine addiction. Here are some of the key questions to ask yourself to determine whether you are addicted to a substance:

— Does a large portion of your day revolve around thinking about cocaine and its effects?

— If you use cocaine, do you spend most of the day thinking about it or at least making plans to use it at the earliest opportunity?

— Can you go a day or a week without using cocaine?

— When you’re not using cocaine, do you feel down, off, or sick?

— Do you feel withdrawal symptoms when you’re not using it?

— Do you need to have more and more cocaine over time to get the same ‘high’?

— Have you tried to reduce consumption but failed?

— Do you set yourself goals at the start of the day but ultimately fail by the end of the day?

— Do you have family or friends that have remarked that they are worried about you?

— Do you isolate yourself from non-using friends in order to use cocaine?

— Has your health suffered? Have you lost friends or a job because of cocaine?

— Are you out of money or struggling financially because of it?

— Do you feel guilty about using cocaine?

— Do you do things that are embarrassing or make you feel shame upon reflection?

— Have you hurt anyone or nearly hurt someone?

— Have you lost contact with friends or family members because of your use?

Am I Addicted?

If you’re asking yourself, “am I addicted?” it probably indicates that something isn’t right. No one likes to feel controlled or trapped by a substance in order to live their life. One of the best things about being free from addiction is that it offers potential for big life improvements. The door becomes open again for the opportunity to have a much better life. Rehab in Melbourne can help you recover what has been lost: a zest for life and the incredible feeling of moving forward and upward.

If you feel as if you’re addicted to cocaine and its yielding negative outcomes in your life, it may be time to seek assistance. Life can be quickly destroyed by addiction. If so, your first point of support should be your GP and/or your specialist.
